Diplodocus longus, the type species, is known from several specimens. detailed analysis has suggested that the original fossil lacks the necessary features to allow comparison with other specimens. For this reason, it has been considered a nomen dubium. A petition to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature was being considered which proposed to make D. carnegii the new type species.
